SPONGO DEVONS

“Spongo Devons” is dedicated to producing high quality, fertile, easy-calving, quiet, polled cattle. Our herd of 40 or so breeders is comprised of both stud and commercial animals with the aim of providing excellent females for either pure Devon breeding programmes or for cross-breeding enterprises. The Devon traits of fertility, easy-calving and quiet temperament will be very useful in any such scheme. 

We also retain some bull calves for stud sires and sale. Being a small enterprise, all our cattle are handled on a regular basis and are very quiet. Our stock’s tractability and calm nature make them suitable for any breeder but especially so for the smaller producer that has either limited exposure to cattle or places this characteristic high on their list of priorities. 

Fertility is also important to us and in this regard we have found the Devon to be excellent. Polled bulls from Belar (Peter Knight, Coonabarabran) and Gowan Ross (Allison Heap, Mullaley) studs have provided pregnancy rates of 100% for the last two seasons (2008 and 2009 drops) Calving ease has also been first-rate. 

All our cattle are grass/lucerne/oats fed unless seasonal requirements necessitate supplementing with grain based feed.
